The Ram ProMaster 2018 range offers good utility, as long as you’re not looking for a semblance of style.

Reflecting the parent company of Ram, FCA, the 2018 Dodge Promaster is in fact a renamed Fiat Ducato. We have higher expectations from Italians. At least the ProMaster’s low, unpainted snout offers a great view of the driver’s seat and Ram tells us that the front bumper is inexpensive to repair when it’s inevitably beaten in a loading dock. The ProMaster is particularly unsightly in its shortest form, where its large body and raised rear end make it almost unfinished.

Inside, things are better but not interesting. The symmetrical design puts the audio system high for convenience, but there is almost no hint of style. The dashboard and front passenger compartment have plenty of space to store small items such as boards and drinks, even if the materials are decadent. Both front seats are firm for everyday use, either in standard fabric or optional vinyl fabric. For an additional cost, Ram offers lumbar support for the driver and a choice of a suspension seat or swivel unit that helps turn this large van into a mobile office. Heated front seats are even offered to people in winter areas.

All 2018 Dodge Promaster come standard with a 5.0-inch touch-screen audio system with a backup camera, power windows and door locks, and air conditioning (which can be removed for credit). The main options are mainly relegated to freight and utilities, such as additional securing devices, racking and additional interior lights. However, Ram offers upgraded front seats, seat radiators, satellite radio, integrated navigation, and an optional 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.

The 2018 Dodge Promaster can be ordered with either a 280-horsepower 3.6-liter gas-powered V6 or a 3.0-liter in-line turbodiesel engine rated at 295 lb-ft. All ProMasters are front-wheel drive with independent front suspension and a single solid axle on the rear.

Chrysler has released the list of relevant VINs in the NHTSA searchable database, allowing owners to see if their pickup is affected by the recall, but they should also expect to receive reminder notices by mail from January 2018.
